Legacy is based around a ten thousand year time capsule buried in Campbelltown (NSW, Australia) at Glenalvon house. The time capsule contains nine metal plates, laser etched with text from members of the community.  The text describes their perspective on life in Campbelltown in 2016 as well as their visions of what Campbelltown could be like in 100 years (2116), and in 10,000 years (12016).

A highly precise GPS co-ordinate, outlining the location of the capsule, was provided by John. M. Daly surveyors.  The co-ordinates; MGA Zone 56, Easting: 298327.640, Northing: 6228174.390 were used to design a clapping rhyme for children so that the capsules location could be remembered through play. This rhyme was taught to local children who were subsequently asked to teach it to other children as a preservation strategy. In doing so the project experiments with a remembrance strategy that resides in living and playing bodies as opposed to archives.  School children who learn the rhyme and can become a custodian of the capsule.  In doing so they are offered a limited edition badge that contains the GPS co-ordinates of the capsule and are asked to pass on the rhyme and eventually the badge across generations.

The project used the directive of imagining a future for the area as its starting point.  In doing so it posed the questions; What is an accepted time scale when we, as a species, talk about our future?  And why is it that we can easily reference events thousands of years ago or even millions of years ago, but find it difficult or futile to imagine a future for humanity 10,000 years from now?
As a result a period of 10,000 years was selected for the retrieval date of the capsule. This was meant to promote long term thinking that extends beyond the four year electoral cycle, the seven year financial cycle, the period of ones own life, or the lives of our children. The extended retrieval date was also influenced by the historical formation of cities about 8500-9000 years ago, which were also linked to the beginnings of agriculture.

Legacy is part of a larger project in development that looks at long term physical (containment) infrastructure currently being constructed and designed to last over 10,000 years. The project will look at ways such infrastructure can also reflect segments of our planets cultural heritage through a series of cultural deposits designed for long term future audiences.
